Alice Pilastre's Music boxes

Alice Pilastre ventures between very ancient techniques and resolutely contemporary forms of art. Tapestry/textile and music are at the base of her work. Her «Ritournelles» are a poetic diversion from our traditional childhood music boxes and invite the visitor to interact with the artwork.

Pilastre's "Papier-Peint Sonore" is a surprising mixed-media installation composed of wallpaper, whose pattern is the encoding of a mechanical Jacquard weaving loom. Its code is simultaneously transposed into a punched ribbon, flowing through a music box one can play, generating the music of the Jacquard loom.
A little further, Alice's "Moëbius Gymnopedy", a music box playing the universally recognized tune by Eric Satie through a steel punched card shaped as a Moëbius ribbon. While the ribbon plays, the tune suddenly changes, to become the exact musical opposite of Satie's tune, and back.
Several other music boxes are to be played and discovered in the gallery along many beautiful installations. On view till April 14, 2012.

Armen Agop in London

"They sit, like silent sentinels, an army of giant water lilies in a still pond, stones in a Zen garden. Yet, despite their size and arresting form, they do not actively call out to the viewer, demanding to be seen. Rather, like planets spun out on their axes, orbiting around their own centres of gravity, they seem deep in conversation with each other, preoccupied within their own galaxy, oblivious to the outside world." from the Essay "Internal Gravity", by Anna Wallace Thompson

Armen Agop is on view till April 14, 2012 at the Selma Feriani Gallery in London.
